How to setup a Terminal Services licensing server

The Terminal Services Licensing Server is a separate entity from terminal server. The license server can be deployed on a separate server, though it can be co-resident on the terminal server in some smaller deployments. Windows 2000 License server setup involves enabling the Terminal Services Licensing service on a Windows 2000 server. This service can be enabled during the operating system installation or later by using Add/Remove Components wizard in the Control Panel and does not require a reboot of the server.

The license service must be discoverable by the terminal servers. By default, the Windows 2000 licensing server should be installed on a windows 2000 domain controller. The terminal server will discover the license server by enumerating its domain controllers and checking for Terminal Services Licensing.

In some cases, you may want to select a specific member server of the domain as the license server for use with various Microsoft Windows 2000 Terminal Services servers in a domain or site. To do this, you need to modify the registry to point to a particular license server.

For a workgroup or a Windows NT 4.0 domain, the license server may be deployed on the terminal server or any peer server. In this case, terminal servers will locate the available license server through broadcast.
