Case Study – Unsuccessful update dyndns with badsys error

Situation: The client just installed DNSer software for updating dynamic DNS. That didn't work. When checking the log file, he found the log: “2005.05.02 18:09:56 Unsuccessful UPDATE [Srv1] http://members.dyndns.org/nic/update?hostname=chicagotech.dyndns.org&system=dynamic&myip=x.x.x.x Response: badsys”

Troubleshooting: 1. He had correct username and password.

2. We could update the IP manually.

3. He had correct hostname.

4. badsys normally means there is a system configuration issue. We found the INI file had this line "system=dynamic". In fact, the system should be the service dyndns.org he was using.

Resolution: replaced dynamic with dyndns in the INI file. It looks like this: “http://members.dyndns.org/nic/update?hostname=chicagotech.dyndns.org&system=dyndns&myip=”
