Case Study - The local device name is already in use

Situation: The company has a logon script for mapping network drives. They get a lot reports about "System error 85 has occurred. The local device name is already in use." when users logon.

Troubleshooting: 1. They use net use /persistent:yes to map those network drives.

2.  They have manually mapped some network drives and checked the reconnect at logon.

3. Some computers still map to some old servers that had been removed from the network.

Resolution: 1. Use net use /persistent:no in the logon script.

2. Add "net use * /d" command line in the top of the logon script so that the script will clean the all old mapping first.
