Case Study – Computer running slowly when connecting to the Internet

Situation: a client had experienced a difficulty to run one of XP  computers. It was extremely slow and had many popup. So, he ran an anti-spyware to clean the computer. The computer didn’t show the advertising and popup after that, but it was still slow.

Troubleshooting: we found that the computer would run normal if we logon without network/internet. It was slow only when he connected to the Internet.

Solution: we used msconfig to find some suspicious programs and disabled them. We also deleted those programs from HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Then we installed the XP sp2 with windows Firewall enabled and other Microsoft security patches to block spyware coming.
