How to upgrade windows 2000 DC to 2003 in-place

1. As the upgrading will introduce schema changes, please perform a
complete backup the existing DCs in case of any unexpected issues.
2. Apply the latest Services Packs to your DCs.
3. Run adprep /forestprep and /domainprep from the 2003 installation CD on
the 2000 DC which holds schema master role.
4. Join the 2003 server to the domain and promote it as DC.
5. Enable the 2003 DCs as GC.
6. Transfer all the FSMO roles from the 2000 DC to the 2003 DC. For
detailed steps, please refer to the following two KB articles:
313994 HOW TO: Create or Move a Global Catalog in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=313994
255690 HOW TO: View and Transfer FSMO Roles in the Graphical User Interface
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=255690
7. Please make sure that all the important data (including third party
applications) on the 2000 DC has been moved to the 2003 DC.
8. Offline the 2000 DC for several days, and ensure that everything works
well with the 2003 DC.
9. You can then run "DCPROMO" on the 2000 DC to demote it with domain admin
credential.
