How to Reboot or Shut Down an ESX/ESXi Host or Virtual Machine


You can shutdown or reboot an ESX/ESXi host using the vSphere Client or command line from
from the service console.

 

A. Shutdown or reboot ESX using vShare Client
1 Login vSphere client.
2 Right click on  the ESX/ESXi host  you want to shut down.
3 Select Reboot or Shut Down.

 

B. Shutdown VMware Virtual Machineusing vShare Client
1 Login vSphere client.
2 Right click on  the Virtual Machine you want to shut down.
3 Select Power>Power Off


 

C. Shutdown ESX Host using command line
1 Log in to the ESX service console.
2 Execute the shutdown command, for example:shutdown -h now
ESX shuts down. When it is finished, a message indicates that it is safe to power off your system.
3 Press the power button until the machine powers off.
